* A New Way of Thinking (late 19th-early 20th century)- Week 9 (2S)

Good Morning!

You will be doing this weeks work at your own pace 🙂 Make sure you manage your time right 🙂

During the Victorian era there was a huge boom in industry.  There was introduction of machines, new ideas, transportation and many other things.  The world was changing!

One of the most revolutionary buildings of the 19th century was built from the ideas of Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband)  This building was used as an exhibition center to showcase the up and coming inventors and their inventions.

New Ideas

Karl Marx (journal entry)

Marx was one of the most influential thinkers and writers of the 19th century.  His ideas and theories made way for the Communist revolutions of the 20th century.

God was being removed from thinking little by little by the Renaissance, the age of reason, and the scientific revolution.  The ideas of these periods allowed for the humanistic views to fill the heads of many and gave way for questioning of foundational pillars.  It continues to this day!

Karl Marx’s ideas became known as Marxism.  He rejected any belief in God and believed that “Man is the world of man.”  He also wrote, he wanted “man to be the supreme being for man.”  These ideas lead to a terrible time in history.  Communism did not fulfill its promise to the people.

Charles Darwin (journal entry)

Charles Darwin - Theory, Book & Quotes - Biography

Born in England in 1809, Charles was the 5th child.  His mother died when he was 8 years old.

Darwin was baptized in the Church of England, and he came from a family of nonconforming Unitarians.  His father and grandfather were freethinkers.  He considered the Bible an authority on morality, but after his Beagle voyage he questioned its history.  He also questioned the benevolence of the Creator in the face of pain and suffering, rather than seeing it as the result of mankind’s sin and the fallen world.

After his daughter Annie died in 1851, Darwin’s faith in Christianity dwindled further and he stopped going to church.  He suffered ill health throughout his adult life and died in 1882.  There is speculation that he reverted to Christianity on his deathbed, but these claims were refuted by his children.

What my own views may be is a question of no consequence to any one but myself.  But, as you ask I may state that my judgment often fluctuates… In my most extreme fluctuations I have never been an Atheist in the sense of denying the existence of a God.  I think that generally (and more and more as I grow older), but not always, that an Agnostic would be the more correct description of my state of mind.

                                                                                                                                excerpt from 1879 letter

Therefore my success as a man of science, whatever this may have amounted to, has been determined, as far as I can judge, by complex and diversified mental qualities and conditions.  Of these, the important have been-the love of science- unbounded patience in long reflecting over any subject-industry in observing and collecting facts-and a fair share of invention as well as of common sense.  With such moderate abilities as I possess, it is truly surprising that I should have influenced to a considerable extent the belief of scientific men on some important points.

Darwin’s summary of his life work

Question:

What difference does it make if we were created by God or if we evolved through a purely material process? ( Answer in your journal)

These men where instrumental in the change of the thinking of the world!  They influenced countries and people.  Many people have lost their lives for these ideas.  And all for what?  These ideas are false and they have failed after some time (like Marxism and Communism).  The only thing that will last is the Word of God, which is TRUTH!

The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.

Isaiah 40:8
